Digital World Agents on Fire

What's coming and why you should be a DW Agent on Fire:

United States - Economic forecast summary (November 2017) --

Source:  OECD.org

The economic expansion is projected to continue in 2018 and 2019. Buoyant asset prices and strong business and consumer confidence will support consumption and investment growth. The impact of slowing employment growth on consumption will be partly offset by wage growth acceleration as the labour market tightens further.
Fiscal policy is projected to become more supportive in 2018 as measures are assumed to be introduced lowering tax rates on corporate and personal income and stimulating investment and consumption. At a time when unemployment is at its lowest level since 2000, the assumed fiscal boost will also contribute to further wage growth, thereby providing the conditions for monetary policy to continue normalising gradually. Policies to help people return to employment would underpin stronger growth of activity while reducing inequalities. Deregulation and tax reform would support stronger investment and help lift productivity.

Cyber Monday is shaping up to be the largest online shopping day in U.S. history

Source

Online sales soared to record highs this Thanksgiving weekend, as more Americans used their smartphones and tablets to shop from home.
More than half of the weekend’s online purchases were placed on mobile devices, according to data from Adobe Analytics, which measures online transactions by the 100 largest U.S. Web retailers. Visits to physical stores, meanwhile, fell as many retailers offered the same deals online as they did in-store.
As of 10 a.m. Monday, Americans had spent nearly $14 billion online since Thanksgiving Day, when many companies started their Black Friday sales. More than half of those purchases came from mobile devices, Adobe reported.
The company added that Cyber Monday was expected to be the biggest online shopping day in history. As of 10 a.m., retailers had racked up $840 million in online sales, a 17 percent increase from last year.

LIKE YOUR HAIR'S ON FIRE

Why stocks are in for a roller coaster ride: NYSE trader

By Alan Valdes, Director of Floor operations at Silverbear
Fasten your seat-belts! In the next four weeks the stock market is in for a roller coaster ride. Today began Q3 earnings season. Oil is front and center, and we have a wild, unpredictable presidential election just 28 days away.
First and foremost for traders is Q3 earnings. This could be the beginning of one of the most volatile earnings seasons in recent memory. S&P 500 stocks are trading at a forward multiple of 17.0 times earnings—close to an all-time high. This is where the bubble broke during the dot-com fiasco.

The global oil glut is not going away

Oil is driving stocks lower today. Also, we have a slew of Fed speakers this week. As of last month, the mere talk of a rate hike sent the markets into a tailspin which, in turn, sent the dollar up. Today the US dollar index is up 0.74% to 97.64 and the US 10-year note hit 1.78%. All this puts pressure on the price of oil.
US crude, after reaching a high on Friday, was off by as much as -1.30% this afternoon and is trading below $51.00 a barrel. The real catalyst in knocking the price of oil down is a glut on the worldwide market. The US, which had a 40-year ban on exporting oil, is now a major exporter. US shale is now a major force in the US oil industry, and then there’s the reemergence of Iran, Iraq and Libya adding millions of barrels a month to this glut. Saudi Arabia, with all this talk of a freeze, is still producing record amounts of black gold. Given everything in play, the world will be awash in oil for the conceivable future. You may wonder how relevant OPEC will remain going forward.

Presidential election to get uglier

With only four weeks to go before we elect a new president, expect to see possible “lead” changes in the polls almost hourly. On Friday, it appeared as though Mr. Trump was done due to an 11-year-old explicit tape, which sent even Republicans scurrying for cover. On Sunday, during the debate, he may have changed his course, as Mr. Trump performed better than many expected. While Hillary Clinton still leads in the polls, WikiLeaks expects to release thousands of more leaks, promising to embarrass the former US Secretary of State. What effect, if any, these may have on the campaign, is anyone’s guess. One thing we can expect for sure, it will most likely get uglier.

Finally, the good news: jobs

One of the bright spots in the last week was the jobs report. Yes, we missed analysts’ expectations. But look past the headline number and you get to see a glimmer of sunshine. Hourly pay for production and non-supervisor employees rose 1.5% year over year. The labor force increased by 3 million in the past 12 months versus 738,000 the previous 12 months. The big number—full-time labor employment in the US—is now at a record high of 124 million.
With the holidays fast approaching, most expect to see seasonal spending increase by 4%. In an economy that is powered by consumer spending, this would be a welcome holiday gift to all investors.

Stock market jitters?

2:06
Stocks took a stomach-turning dive on Monday, sending the Dow Jones industrial average down more than 1,000 points in a matter of seconds. The market recovered some of its losses but was still way down for the day.

Investors around the world are worried about China, the world's second-largest economic power and a huge market for American products. China devalued its currency two weeks ago and has shown other signs of economic weakness.
Two hours into trading, the Dow was down 454 points, or 2.8 percent, at 16,005. At its worst point, just after the opening bell, the Dow was down an eye-popping 1,089 points, or 6.6 percent.
"Fear has taken over," Adam Sarhan, CEO of the investment company Sarhan Capital, told CNBC. "The market topped out last week."
Get live market quotes from CNBC
Last week was the worst for the market in four years, and the Dow had already entered what is known as a correction, down more than 10 percent from its all-time high, reached in May.
On Monday, the Standard & Poor's 500 index, a broader gauge of the overall market, was down more than 5 percent before recovering, and the Nasdaq, loaded with technology stocks, was down more than 8 percent.
In percentage terms, the drop in the Dow, even at its worst point on Monday, was not nearly as severe as in historic stock market crashes. In 1987, on what came to be known as Black Monday, the Dow fell by 22 percent.
But the free-fall was more than enough to get investors' attention. It also got the attention of Lawrence Summers, the former treasury secretary.

REMEMBER:  OUR INDUSTRY HAS NEVER HAD  A DOWN QUARTER!

With DWP you're on a pretty boring ride:  it's only  ever gone up.

FROM THE 'EDUCATE YOURSELF ON WHY DWP IS A GREAT BIZ' FILE:

THE PAYMENTS INDUSTRY EXPLAINED

  • John Heggestuen
  • May 15, 2015, 5:01 PM

  • The ecosystem for credit- and debit-card processing involves a complicated set of players interacting to process every transaction. Five types of players are involved: acquirers/processors, issuers, card networks, gateway providers, and independent sales organizations (ISOs).   That's us!

  • To process a typical transaction, three steps must occur: authorizing, batching, and funding. Each participant in this process takes a fee off of the total volume of a transaction. The remainder is deposited in a merchant's account.

  • Three trends will shape the payment-card-processing ecosystem from 2015 onward: the EMV security migration, rapid development of new payment technologies, and the massive card-fraud problem in the US.

  • The mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) is going to have a massive impact on the payments-hardware and payments-software industry. By 2019, we forecast that nearly 80% of US retailers will have implemented a mPOS device.

U.S. stocks fell Monday, weighed down by a tumble in oil prices as well as Greek voters’ rejection of creditors’ conditions for further financial aid.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 46.53 points, or 0.3%, to end at 17683.58. Stocks spent midday trading around the flat line after earlier being down by as much as 166 points.
The S&P 500 dropped 8.02 points, or 0.4%, to 2068.76 and the Nasdaq Composite Index lost 17.27 points, or 0.3%, at 4991.94.

Better idea --Pin it to DWP!:

CARPINTERIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--General purpose and private label credit, debit, and prepaid cards generated $5.165 trillion in payments for goods and services in 2014. Processing fees, including interchange paid by U.S. merchants to handle that business, were $78.09 billion, up from $72.44 billion in 2013 when fees were $4.768 trillion, according to the annual report on U.S. merchant processing fees published by The Nilson Report, the top trade newsletter covering the card and mobile payment industries.
“Fees merchants pay to process card payments rise annually because Americans use their credit, debit, and prepaid cards more each year”
