Job growth muted in September, but not for retail

October 02, 2015

While the overall picture of job growth in September is not as positive as expected, retailers added a much needed bright spot: The retail industry excluding autos, gas and restaurants, added 18,700 jobs in September and 213,700 new jobs since September of 2014.
“Today’s employment release comes as a disappointment for the broad economy, but not necessarily for retail as retailers have generated many new jobs for American households,” said NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz. “We’ve witnessed a very resilient economy thus far this year and retailers continue to gear up for future spending by consumers as we head into the all-important holiday season.”
“Retailers right now are in a wait-and-see mode when it comes to the bigger picture of economic growth, and are cautiously optimistic about continued improvements in consumer spending, which could come directly from improvements in the labor market,” Kleinhenz said.
